The POC jam will now overlap with Tuesday Jam on 1st and 3rd Tuesdays, but will remain a POC only affinity upstairs. POC can access both spaces for one donation. We are hopeful that this move will foster opportunities for more interaction between our newer and more experienced POC dancers, who regularly attend the Tuesday jams, as well as open up a more easeful pathway for POC dancers curious about dipping their toes into the wider CI community.

Come prepared to move your body! contact improvisation is a dynamic movement form that invites you to engage at the pace and intensity you are comfortable with that day.

  • CI stands for Contact Improvisation... aka Contact Improv... also simply referred to as "contact" within the community

    Contact originated in the post-modern dance era of the 1970s in New York City. Though he never adopted this moniker, Steve Paxton is often credited as the founder or father of contact.

  • POC stands for "People of Color"

    Honestly, we aren't stoked about the term but we are using this acronym to help us identify our affinity space.

    Whether you identify as a person of color, a person from the global majority, a melaninated human, or something in that vein, we welcome you.

    Due to the other contact classes and jams being White dominant spaces, we host this affinity space for folks of color to explore the form with less barriers.

    While we appreciate White allies supporting our endeavor, we hold this affinity space with discernment. If you identify as White and want to engage in this practice, we invite you to check out the other jams happening throughout the week at Finnish Hall.

  • The term jam is used to describe an open improvisational space.

  • Our class and jam are donation-based. No one is ever turned away for lack of funds, and no donation is ever too small or too large! The suggested donation is $15-30 for each offering.
